I am wondering the source of "Rated 4.9/5 based on 397 reviews?"
Are there any independent sites with reviews of WPMF?
And I couldn't easily find the revision history and therefore couldn't see if it has been updated to be compatible with v4.3.

Hi Alan,

The review are based on an internal user rating. Yes it has been reviewed by bloggers:

You'll find some independant reviews. The plugin has been updated for WP 4.3 of course, it just require WordPress 4.0+ to work properly.
