Let me attempt to explain another way. Say we have our images stored external to Wordpress.
Step 1) We prepare WP Folders for import
Step 2) We identify the source for these images
Step 3) Are we able to direct these images and import to:
...specific folders
...specific categories
We recognize by your reference that if we originate from a folder, we can import to that folder, but what I'm asking is there a mechanism to "map" the source files in a generic sense to Step 3) above? i.e., the "mapping schema".

Yes, you can sync media files to specific folders/categories in WP Media Folder. You can see an attached image for the mechanism.
