external media storage

can this be used as an external media storage if I choose not to host any files on my WordPress site, eg if I want to add a featured image in a blog post will I be able to use an image from external media?

You can use WP Media folder Cloud Addon version, it could help you sync data from Cloud server; such as: Google drive, Dropbox or OneDrive.
