I have a Woocommerce website with about 11,000 products and I plan to add about 10 times that amount soon. Currently, the uploads folder cannot even be opened in my FTP client because it simply times out. There are too many files in this one folder, as you can imagine. The WP Media page also doesn't seem to search ALL of the files that are on the server either as it seems to time out...

I am wanting to organize the product images by Manufacturer folders. This way there will be much less files in a single folder, resulting in less server load and timeouts when trying to access the folder.

Will this plugin make actual folders on the server and move the images to that folder? Or will it simply provide a visual/virtual organization for the user, not affecting any file structure at the server level?

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us here about this extension.
Will this plugin make actual folders on the server and move the images to that folder?

You can import folders and its sub-folders from FTP, the folder in WP Media Folder is virtual. For more information: https://www.joomunited.com/documentation/wp-media-folder-documentation#toc-4-4-ftp-server-file-importer

Hope it helps!

I have a similar question as the OP and I must admit I am a little confused.
The part about virtual folders is clear, but I am not so much interested in that.
I am interested in the Server file importer & sync function, but it's not quite clear to me what exactly it does.

What I want to achieve:

Create galleries from nested folders that are preferably outside of wp-content directory (for SEO-purposes). For example:

http://www.example.com/custom-folder/subfolder-1

It is clear to me that I can upload files with FTP into that folder and sync/import them with the plugin. But what exactly happens then? Are the files physically copied to a directory inside wp-content or do they stay as they are and are just made available through the Media Library interface?

What I need is a physical folder structure with media files that is visible to search engines. Ideally outside of wp-content and in the root directory of WordPress. Basically like telling the Library, "hey there are also media files in these folders, take them into account". Is it possible with your plugin?

As far as I can tell, this is what the Google Drive/ Dropbox add on does, but I might be wrong.

Tom

Hi,

Yes that's a point, WP Media Folder file sync tool is doing the following:
- Importing the media and folder structure as a custom taxonomy in the WordPress media manager
- Filles will be copied in the /uploads folder
- Files imported will be indexed in the WordPress database in order to use all the plugin features like image replace, thumbnail generation...

Thanks Tristan.
So, if I create a gallery, it will use only the copies in wp-content/uploads? The search engines will see only: wp-content/uploads/2017/01/15/file.jpg?
Is it possible to create a gallery from the files in the original folder (outside of "uploads" or "wp-content";)?

Is it possible to preserve the physical folder tree and have the images indexed and available for galleries? This way search engines can recognize a structure.
The logic behind WP Library is bad legacy from the days when WP was only blog software and it not SEO-friendly.

As I understand your answer, there is no way to preserve the physical folder structure in a way that is visible to search engines, even if it inside wp-content?

Yes I totally agree that's a pity but that's not something possible, I'm sorry.
