I am in the process of trying to replace WP-Filebase Pro on a site and I'd like to make sure I can get at least the same minimum functionality we have today. I've looked at the FAQ and other forum posts and it isn't clear whether I can in the currently shipping version. Apologies if this is indeed answered and I just missed it.

With WPFB, there are several thousand existing files that are under external subversion control in a directory structure that defines our categories. The content managers never log into WordPress to manage these files. They upload them via an internal page, and svn propagates the copies to the appropriate folders on the webservers, and WPFB syncs hourly with those folders, presenting an Ajax-based view of the folder structure (based on shortcodes) on pages dedicated to each category or sub-category.

First, it appears that WP File Download has the ability to read a folder's contents without issue, but is there any sort of import/sync that needs to happen automatically? We run a wp-cron script to handle that today with WPFB. Is WP Media Folder perhaps a better solution for this or is File Download the right solution? Or will it require both?

Second, can we embed shortcodes on our pages that correspond to specific sub-categories, and when files are put in the appropriate folder/category they are automatically displayed on that page? We explicitly categorize the filesystem programmatically so that content managers are not logging into WordPress to manage media a 2nd or 3rd time, and want to present everything in a given folder all the time.

Third, I see Ajax referenced in a few places, but it isn't clear to me if the end-user view is a dynamic Ajax-based view? So we can keep with the simple page <> category association we have now and even perhaps present multiple sub-categories via their own shortcode?

TIA for your time, this looks like a great plugin to replace the defunct WPFB Pro.

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us here about this extension.

Let me try to respond to your questions.

First, it appears that WP File Download has the ability to read a folder's contents without issue, but is there any sort of import/sync that needs to happen automatically? The import and sync feature in WP Media Folder will be implemented in WP File Download the future version.
Currently, you can import manually in WP File Download plugin. For more information:
https://www.joomunited.com/wordpress-documentation/wp-file-download/227-wp-file-download-configuration#toc-3-file-importer-2

Yes, you can insert a category shortcode on your posts/pages. Then the new files and categories inside it will be updated automatically on frontend.
In this case, are you talking about the files storage on the cloud servers? That works with our plugin.

Third, I see Ajax referenced in a few places, but it isn't clear to me if the end-user view is a dynamic Ajax-based view? So we can keep with the simple page <> category association we have now and even perhaps present multiple sub-categories via their own shortcode?

I'm not sure about your question about Ajax. However, each category has its shortcode which you can insert anywhere on your site.
And the sub-categories of a category will be displayed on frontend also.

Hope it helps!

Thank you for the response! This makes me much more comfortable with making a purchase. A few follow-ups, if you don't mind?

The import and sync feature in WP Media Folder will be implemented in WP File Download the future version.

Any timeline on this future release? I know it's hard to commit to a specific date with software development, but is this a few weeks or a year plus?

Is the manual import something that is done via PHP so it could be scripted outside the WordPress interface perhaps, or an API call made? If it's a long period before you anticipate the automatic sync being available, that would at least provide an interim solution.

In this case, are you talking about the files storage on the cloud servers? That works with our plugin.

The files aren't on cloud servers, no, they are on a locally mounted NFS export. Does that make any difference?

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me with more information.

We've planned to release this feature on version 5.0. It could be a long term target.

This is something not possible in our plugin currently. For urgent case, you should customize yourself or contact our partners:

Our plugin includes local file importer, you can import any files on document root.

Hope it helps!

My company has run into this same issue. We've had good luck with WP File Download except for two issues.

1. After exporting and importing files to the site, the WP File Download links are different than the Filebase Pro links were. This means every link on every page needs to be updated. With some sites with 500+ files linked all over, that's quite a few hours of manual labor.

So... we are actively working on a script that will rename the Filebase Pro links on all pages/posts on the site to the new WPFile Download link format.

2. The link formatting on the page doesn't look the same as Filebase Pro and tweaking with the settings in WP File Download by default couldn't get us there. For example, one client just wanted the files listed by file name with that name being a link to the file. Seems pretty simple, but not possible with the default settings.

So, we dug into the CSS and were able to get it to look very similar to how it looked in Filebase Pro.

If you are still struggling with this and would like to talk to us about helping on your site, email me at [removed]
