Private 'Library' with Auto Notification?

I have a particular use case and need to know if WPFD can help.

We run a continuing education school for adult professionals and need to create a 'library' section so that they can always keep on top of new developments in their field. The features we need are:
1) Access by students only (we already have created a 'Student' role in WP)
2) Automatic notification via email to all students of changes/additions in the private section - not on a file basis, but on category
3) Ability to automatically add users who are assigned to the 'student' role to the notification list

Can WPFD do this?
