Can landscape pictures span multiple columns?

The icon for the masonry theme shows landscape pictures spanning across two columns. I can't seem to make this happen with my landscape photos? Are photos only permitted to stay within one column? If so, I found this extremely misleading and would have changed my purchase decision had I known.
