Drive custom properties

Can you explain me what is Google Drive's "Custom Property"?

It's described in Google's DRIVE developer's documentation here.

In short, it's an expansion of definable metadata beyond what DRIVE tracks by default. I need this, as our project need to categorize files beyond what standard metadata "description" allows. There's a DRIVE add in called: METADRIVE which does this, however I tried it and it's broken (had several email conversations w/their staff, their working on it but likely won't have it fixed by my deadline).
