With a lot of folders, the folder icons take up a lot of space in the media library window. It would be great to be able to use a different layout, e.g. tree view and/or have the folders display on the left side. On my search for similar design issues I found the following plugin https://codecanyon.net/item/wp-real-media-library-media-categories-folders/13155134 which does pretty much exactly what media folder does, just in a different layout which I must admit is nifty.

Maybe something WP Media Folder could incorporate for a next version.

Hi,

Thanks for adding your feature request here. We’ll keep that in mind for a future release!

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.
WP Media Folder also got the left folder tree (that the other plugin was maybe inspired though) :p
Did you notice that WP Media Folder also have an alternative layout with small folders and thumbnails?

Do you mean like hide totally all the folders from the center part?

I know this isn't my suggestion, but while beginning to use the plugin I can see what they are asking for.

In the example they provided, the UI is simplified into a single tree that occupies the entire vertical space (also appears to be resizable).

With WP Media Folder we've got a breadcrumb, a tree, and icons all in the same interface (which seems to be be overkill) and they occupy the same space as the media files. In the example they provided, the tree area provides access to all the functionality that's needed and provides maximum space for the media files to display. With WP Media Folder, as the tree or folders grows—it continues to take up space and push the actual media file down. If the interface were more like the example, there also wouldn't be a need to duplicate the same controls at the top and bottom of the page.

It's not about having a view that has smaller icons and takes up a little less space—it's about optimizing the use of the space to make the best use of the functionality you've created.

I only chimed in because the better your product is, the better I look for choosing you.

I really like UI from WP Real Media Library - it's design clean, clear. In addition, it remembers the width of the tree folders. I would like to welcome something similar to WP Media Folder ;)

Hi,

@cityoflawrence, I got the problem of the space taken by the folder tree and this is something we will handle (right after finishing the gallery addon). Maybe an update of your version would be good too as we've made a lot of improvement in the 4.0 version :)
Plus, we've planned to make some alternate folder view on the Google Drive model, with folder colors.

The improvements you've been making are definitely a step in the right direction. Some of the improvements I might even argue are cleaner and more simplified than WP Real Media Library. However, there's still room for continued improvement. I've attached a modified screenshot with some suggested thoughts based on the current version.

The breadcrumbs have been replaced by highlighting where one is on the tree—thus recovering that space. The large folder icons have been removed as they duplicate the functionality of the tree and occupy a great deal of usable space. The media files have been moved up and to the right of the tree to maximize the space they occupy—as they are the single most important part of the media library.
