Sometimes the downloadable content (a file) needs a preview before download. for example a 3d object file.
being able to show a preview with a 3D preview service is optional, but as I'm familiar with this issue from many other sites and the huge amount of formats exist for 3D Files, i believe the best thing will be to upload an image preview. and to automate the process ill do it this way:
name your product on Dropbox door_5401.stp > if there's an image file named door_5401.png (or other image formats) the plug-in will understand it is a preview image for the file and will list it accordingly.
that's the basic idea but there is more suggestion for development. i can go in details if needed.

There are many other file types that require preview or text description preview.
another example: a script (code) that does something but to make it clear i will create animated gif to show what it does. so i will upload a code as file+gif preview.

just one of many cases..
