It seems the WP File Download plug in is displaying Hits of the file verses actual downloads. While I would love to think there are been over 200 downloads of one of my podcasts from my website, I seriously doubt it. More than likely, when a page is opened that has the podcast url embedded in it that could be played, it fires a tag that gets captured for the statistics.

Can you confirm if this is the case?
Is there any way to fine tune the file download counter to capture only when the file is requested from the server in an actual download?

If the podcast download statistics are correct, I should be pretty famous by now, LOL.

It could be you are using the old version, please update to the latest one. It will count for the downloading accurately.

If it still remains the issue when using the latest one, please drop us a ticket (menu Support > Ticket support).
Our developer in charge will take a look at that.

My WP File Download is version 4.6.5 and the Add On is version 4.2.1 Are there later versions? I update my plug ins on a regular basis.

Yes, those are our latest version of WP File download and Addon plugin. It could be something wrong at your site.

The Download Count in "Statistics" was fixed, the Hits column on frontend contains download and preview count.
The define of Hits is so general, so we will discuss to keep that or change it to count download times only.

Thank you for recognizing the issue. I understand it is a complicated process when it comes to statistics and properly accounting for just the display of a url on a blog post to a view and when the viewer actually clicks on the url to download the file or listen to the audio file. It is not necessarily crucial for me, but potentially an issue for other publishers who use the statistics to sell advertising or make the case that their content is being viewed and consumed.
