With WP Files and Google Cloud connection we would like a Google Doc to open in a new window and display the Google Doc in the web editor.
Basically, we just want the directory listing to open new windows displaying the Google Doc and NOT download a MS Word version.

Is this possible or does it always want to download a Microsoft Word document? Same for Google Sheets etc. Instead of a download we'd just like it to open up the doc in native Google Doc editor.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Thanks for adding your feature request here.

Our plugin supports to preview and download files presently. Your request is so convenient but it relates to some other functions.
Anyway, we’ll keep that in mind for a future release!

Instead of looking for the Google Doc Word Download it would be ideal to just open the document in the native Google Doc editor/viewer in a new tab.

The issue is that we like using Google Docs, but when using them with your plugin our end users have to download and open the Word Doc on their phone.
That is not convenient. It would be much easier and convenient for all involved if there was a way to simply link to the actual Google Doc and not the Download.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me with more information.

As I understand, you can use the Preview feature for users to see your document content, your users don't need to download files and view after that.

It seems like it is actually more work to to go through the preview process rather than just a straight link to the public google doc. There is also the issue of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) in which the preview can present problems for people with screen readers which forces them to download the files which is also an inconvenience. It would be very helpful for government entities or businesses that care about providing accessible documents if you could work on providing a direct link to the Google Document when using the Google Drive connection plugin.

The issue with the preview is that those with a disability cannot "see" it and screen readers don't always play nicely with the preview but they do play nicely with a direct link to a Google doc.

+1 for this.

We have a similar problem with preview button not showing up for a google doc listed in WP (via cloud connection). Always downloading is not helpful.

Looking through the Wordpress Demo page(https://www.joomunited.com/wordpress-demo/?page_id=1449&ftags=word)
There is a way to view the Word docs with that icon. (attached screenshot)

I don't see that icon anywhere.. or a setting to enable it for the google drive documents within WP.

Thanks,
Shweta

You should add your file format at: Main Settings > Extensions to open with viewer.
The *.docx; for example is not included by default.

Hope it helps!
