I need to replace WP Filebase on our higher education website. I need to organize documents, primarily PDFs, by category/folder.

I also need to publish PDFs for downloading singularly or as a collection (category).

Will WP Media Folder accomplish this, or will I need WP File Download, as well?

If so, do both your plugins share the same categories/taxonomy?

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us here about this extension.

I need to replace WP Filebase on our higher education website. I need to organize documents, primarily PDFs, by category/folder.

I also need to publish PDFs for downloading singularly or as a collection (category).

In your case, you should use our WP File download plugin because you can display your single files/categories easily.
Our WP Media Folder plugin is based on WP Media management default, so it's mainly to display images/galleries.

do both your plugins share the same categories/taxonomy?

No, files in these 2 plugins are stored in 2 different places on your server.

Hope it helps!
Kind regards,
