Onedrive hosting vs syncronization

I'm still not clear on the OneDrive integration. I understand I can link to a OneDrive folder, and then see it as a folder in WP Media Library. To display its contents in a WP image gallery, are those files then served from OneDrive, or do I have to first import (copy) them into WP Media Library so they're hosted on my WP server?

You can insert directly files uploaded to OneDrive folders in Media library into your posts/pages.
With files in the cloud folders, we just index files information, files actually stored on the cloud server.
