I've been looking at a few "download managers" and have been having trouble finding something that allows me to really control how the files are presented. I'm running the "Newspaper" theme, which has a really nice picker for custom post types and categories and displays the results with an ajax paginator. Under the hood, Newspaper is using "Visual Composer", if that helps.
How possible is it to query WP FIle Download posts outside of your widgets or shortcodes?

I don't think I fully understand what you would like to do with WP File download and Newspaper theme.
I can say that it works with visual composer (you can insert file/category of files in Visual composer using the editor button) and that it's based on WordPress custom post type. Of course I'm not sure what it'll looks like on the live site with the theme
