We store a significant number of documents and would not want these stored on the Joomla site...but accessible FROM the joomla site. Can DROPFILES - just "link to" an external file storage location (like google drive)? Allow users to download, etc - but not actually store the individual files on the joomla site.

Yes, certainly. That's the reason we develop Dropfiles sync with the Cloud.
The files are indexing on Dropfiles, stored actually on the Cloud server.

Yes, we have WP File download for WP and it's be the same as Dropfiles to connect categories/files from the Cloud server.
