Has the gallery just got to be used on an article page. Could it be used as a gallery on its own. Gallery link on menu, then say 6 categories on the gallery page?

You can insert some galleries in an article, then add to menu that article. Gallery link is not implemented yet.
A single image and link to a menu item, an article or custom URL only.
