WP File download: THE WordPress file manager

WP File Download is a file manager for WordPress that makes it easier than ever to organize your files. The plugin has been developed in line with the WordPress media manager. That means you can organize your files in the file manager, like the WordPress media library, and then insert those files into your posts and pages using Gutenberg or the classic WordPress editor.

WordPress media manager

WordPress comes with a basic in-built image and file manager: your WordPress media library. Normally, you would use this media manager to upload images, but did you know that you can also upload other file types? The WordPress media manager also supports images, documents, audio and videos.

Default file types supported by WordPress:

  • Images: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif
  • Documents: .pdf, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .ppsx (Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint), .odt (OpenDocument Text Document), .xls, .xlsx (Excel)
  • Audio: .mp3, .m4a, .ogg, .wav
  • Video: .mp4, .m4v (MPEG-4), .mov (QuickTime), .wmv (Windows Media Video), .avi, .mpg, .ogv (Ogg), .3gp (3GPP), .3g2 (3GPP2)

If you can do all this with the basic WordPress media library, why would you need another file manager? Well, for starters, the media library is not really a file manager; it’s difficult to organize your media library without directories. Apart from that, you can only share the files using links. With WP File Download, you can make your WordPress media library a proper file manager.

WP File download

WP File Download is a WordPress plugin that we built to work like the WordPress Media Library. In practice, that means there are two views. First, there is a file manager or file browser where you can list and organize your WordPress files.

Second, there is a tool for the WordPress editor (both classic and Gutenberg) to insert your files into pages, posts or other custom WordPress post types. WP File Download uses a simple, easy-to-use lightbox from which can browse and locate files, and insert them into your content. Here are a few more reasons why you might want to use our WordPress file manager.

Key features of WP File download

There’s a lot you can do with WP File Download. You don’t have to use all of the features, but it’s good to know what you can do with your file manager. Check out a selection of how you can manage your documents better with WP File Download.

Organize files into categories and sub-categories

It’s difficult to keep track of your files if they’re all lumped together. With WP File Download, you can create categories and subcategories to organize your files based on topic. Your file categories and subcategories work like folders, which makes it easier to browse and locate files.

Move files and categories using drag and drop

One of the best features in the WordPress Media Library is the ability to upload files using drag and drop. With WP File Download, you can also move files from one category (or subcategory) to another one by dragging and dropping. In fact, you can even move categories using drag and drop!

Upload files using the HTML5 multi uploader

Do you need to upload a lot of files? Numbers don’t matter in WP File Download. The file uploader supports multiple files at the same time. Gather your files, use our HTML5-powered file manager and upload them in bulk.

Import files from your server

If you are used to uploading files from your server, you don’t have to download them and reupload them through the file manager. Instead, you can import them immediately through WP File Download to save yourself a lot of hassle.

Update and replace files with just one click

If you change a file, normally you would remove the old one and upload the new version. Not anymore. WP File Download’s file manager makes it easier to update old files with new versions. Locate the file you want to replace in the file manager, click on select files and upload the updated file.

Set up email notifications

If you don’t manage your website on your own, your editors can change files for you. It’s only natural that you want to stay on top of how files are changing, but you don’t have to look through the files yourself. Instead, you can set up email notifications to receive mail whenever a document changes. Neat, right?

Use a single file manager for all tasks

Inserting files is very easy. When you use WP File Download’s Gutenberg block, you get a file manager in the form of a lightbox. Navigate and browse your directories, find the file you are looking for and insert it with ease!

Insert files in WordPress’ Gutenberg editor

Like images, you might want to share sound files, videos or documents. Use WP File Download’s Gutenberg block to effortlessly add files to your WordPress pages, posts or custom post types. Bonus: the plugin doesn’t insert documents as links, but as icons, so they look even better!

Locate files using the flexible search engine

Too many files? We get it. Locating files isn’t always easy, and browsing takes too much precious time. Here’s an idea: use WP File Download’s file search engine. You can create your own search engines very easily, and they’re all very powerful. For example, you can create a search engine that looks inside documents with the full text search!

Apply access limitation based on WordPress user role in one click

Not all files are for public consumption. Unlike the standard WordPress Media Library, WP File Download’s file manager lets you enforce the rules. Click on a category and choose whether everyone should have access to it, or whether it is available only for private viewing: that’s just one click away!

View file download statistics to adapt your offering

Do you like numbers? We sure do, and even if you don’t like them, statistics can help you make sense of how your WordPress readers are using your files. WP File Download comes with file download statistics to help you understand your user base and better manage your offering.

Change the theme

We've worked hard to give you an excellent experience. Part of that is recognizing not everyone likes the same thing, and that’s perfectly fine. You can change what your file manager looks like. Choose from the default list-like theme, the Google Drive-like look, the table layout, a tree view or the Joom theme.

Customize your icon set

Why stop at the theme? Choose between two icon sets, or if you want complete control, build your own item set by uploading icons for the different file types. We’re not playing around!

There are even more features where those came from. If you want to read more about what you can do with WP File Download, check out our file manager’s main page. Or, if you can’t wait to get your hands dirty with your new file manager, explore the features yourself!

WordPress’ Media Library performs its job pretty well, but it has its limitations. But there is something better: organize your files, customize the file manager and share your files with the proper, intended audience. Sometimes, you just need to go wild with your ideas, and WP File Download lets you do that.
