Playing Around with Files in WP File Download

WP File Download is all about giving you freedom and comfort when managing files. Whether you want to embed files in a post or a page, or you want your users to be able to download media with ease, WP File Download is the go-to WordPress plugin.

Version 3.6 of WP File Download, which has just rolled out, comes with subtle touches that facilitate your file management tasks on WordPress. Let’s dive in!

We all make mistakes! You’re trying to upload some files, and then it hits you - you just copied them to the wrong category. It could even be as simple as wanting to move some files around to organize your directories. Whether on your desktop machine or on WordPress, we’ve all been there.

WP File Download’s latest update comes with the necessary and most familiar of tools to help you toy around with your categories - cutting, copying and pasting files. Best of all, they work exactly like they do on your desktop computer.

‘Cutting’ a file implies moving files in-between categories; the file would disappear from its original directory, and start to reside in its new one. Conversely, copying creates a replica of the file in the target category, so it exists in two places. How does that work in WP File Download?

multi-copy-paste

To start off, select the files that you want to copy or move - remember that you can select multiple files by holding down the control button. Then, press cut or copy, depending on whether you want to move the files, or simply make a copy of them.

To finish the process, head to the category of your choice, and paste your files! If the operation was successful, you should see a confirmation prompt, so be on the lookout!

Category Ownership, create user file repository

Another new feature in WP File Download 3.6 is the ability to change category ownership. For example, if you created a category and you’re no longer in charge of maintaining it, you may delegate it to a different user or assign a category to a user. The idea behind is that you can assign a category to a user and using the user role configuration, allow those users to manage only their own file category. You got your user private file repository!

To start off, ensure that category ownership is enabled. To check, head to WP File Download’s configuration page and switch on category ownership if it is not enabled already.

Owner-settings

Round off category ownership by selecting the category in question from WP File Download, and changing its owner, or removing it altogether.

The final change in this update is a subtle one! When navigating across categories in WP File Download, you’ll notice a brand new loader.

Hi, I'm looking for a good file manager to enable users to download files from my site, though one of my requirements would be to allow them to select multiple files and batch download it. From your demo, it looks like you can only download whole categories. Is it possible for users to select certain files from within a category then batch download them? i.e. there are 10 files in the category but I only need 6 of them, can I select those 6 and download them as 1 zip?

Do let me know, thanks!
