Joomla 4 Features Overview

joomla4

It has been five long years since we last saw a major update for Joomla. It is fair to say that Joomla 3 has not aged well, but taking inspiration from WordPress, the content management system (CMS) is gearing up for a brand new release - Joomla 4. With release looming on the horizon, we’re here to bring you a first look at the open-source CMS’ update.

A Sparkling New Backend

Joomla 4 comes with a host of new changes, as you will undoubtedly notice in no time at all. Right away, the login screen has been revamped with a new style and improved functionality. Among other new changes, it is now possible to personalize your login screen with a wallpaper, spreading your brand colors far and wide on your blog. The next stop is your Joomla dashboard, itself completely transformed.

Your blog’s dashboard is the hub of your Joomla website’s activity, but it has been encumbered and cluttered for far too long. It has not been a pretty sight, but once you are logged in, you are in for a treat because what greets you is a revamped backend designed with users like you in mind. In fact, Joomla 4 brings a brand new dashboard that you can customize to your heart’s content with your favorite modules and shortcuts.

Forget a myriad of options inundating your dashboard - the new Joomla experience is all about hiding away everything except the tools that are most important to you. Even the menu adopts this ideal. To this end, organization takes the center stage with a number of main-level menu items hiding other, less important pages on the left of your screen.

The dashboard is not the only component of your website that is configurable. Joomla 4 is also introducing a quickstart menu to the top of your screen which you can populate with shortcuts to your most-used tools, such as a shortcut to create a new article. Notifications have also found a new home next to the quickstart menu.

Perhaps one of the clunkiest parts of Joomla has been the media manager. It should come as no surprise that Joomla 4 has taken the criticism to heart and is working hard on improving your media haven while retaining its core formula.

All in all, cleanliness is the keyword in Joomla 4, and when the major release is available, you will find these concepts throughout your blog. Joomla’s new theme uses a wealth of white space, for a re-imagined, clean look that makes managing your brand’s website a delightful experience.

Accessibility Matters

Joomla 4 owes much of its transformed look to new typography and a new color scheme. For instance, Joomla 4 now uses the clean Roboto font to improve legibility. Moreover, the CMS is now also WCAG 2.0-compliant, making it accessible for visually-impaired users, apart from ensuring a cleanlier and less tiring interface.

If you’re always on the go, you can be sure that your smartphone will never be far from your hands. Joomla 4 makes it easier for you to manage your website when you are away from your computer. The new Joomla theme is adapted to mobile devices, bringing your website to you wherever you are.

Taking Joomla for a Test Run

One of WordPress’ main selling points has always been its effortless installation. Five minutes is all it takes to install WordPress and give it a try, and now Joomla is following in its competitor’s steps with a simplified, no-nonsense installer.

Whereas Joomla 4’s release schedule is still incomplete, you can already take it for a test drive. You can even contribute to the major release by installing and checking out the alpha version. Alternatively, if you want to quench your curiosity without going into any trouble, you can experiment with the prototype without having to install anything.

A major release of Joomla is long overdue, but finally we are getting it! Cleanliness, organization and accessibility take Joomla into a modern age - it is Joomla like you have never seen it, and it is coming soon to your blog!
